PROTECT FREEPORT'S COAST FROM HIGH-RISK ACTIVITIES

Freeport’s beautiful coastline and unique coastal ecosystem are at risk.
A proposal to skid a (+/-80 ton), 100-foot vessel down a gully and through the coastal marsh is currently pending before the Town of Freeport. The project seeks to clearcut coastal forest and traverse marsh and shellfish habitats off Shore Drive to build a rushed temporary access road and boat ramp. This high-risk project has not been carefully reviewed for environmental and engineering safety, and threatens to cause significant, lasting damage to Freeport’s coast and wildlife.

Materials regarding this proposal are available on the Town of Freeport’s website at www.freeportmaine.com/240/Coastal-Waters-Commission (See “0 Shore Drive Documents”).
Potential damage includes:
-
Loss of natural marshland

-
Significant erosion and sedimentation

-
Destabilized shores

-
Increased flood risk

-
Harm to upland property

-
Disruption to spawning grounds and wildlife habitats, including horseshoe crabs and shore birds

-
Degraded water quality

-
Stark visual intrusion

-
Interference with fishing and navigation

Please join Freeport community members and conservationists in urging denial of this risky project.
Over the coming months, the project will continue to be reviewed by the Town, state and federal agencies. Keep an eye on this site for updates.
